Episode 18: Doc Gooden

There is no athlete who meant more to me growing up than Dwight Gooden. My first year of fully following baseball was 1985, when Gooden had one of the greatest seasons in MLB history. Gooden posted a record of 24-4 with a 1.53 ERA and 268 strikeouts to win the pitcher's Triple Crown and Cy Young. Over the next decade, a large mural of Dwight Gooden hung by the Lincoln Tunnel almost as if it was the welcome to New York. I walked with Dwight Gooden a week after he had his #16 retired by the Mets. It was a dream come true.

Episode 17: Shaheen Holloway

Fresh off Seton Hall's victory in the NIT, I walked with coach Shaeeh Halloway. A graduate and player at Seton Hall, Coach Sha is a rising star in the NCAA. His first appearance on the grand stage was in 2022, when he led St. Peter's, a #15 seed, to the Elite Eight. In the last two seasons, Coach Sha took a team that was forecasted to be among the bottom of the Big East to a 4th place finish. After being passed over for a tournament bid, he led the Pirates to their first NIT Championship in 71 years. Shaheen Halloway talked about the challenges of coaching in the NIL era as we walked on the campus.

Episode 16: P.K. Subban

In May, I walked around Branch Brook Park in Newark with NHL legend P.K. Subban. A 13-year NHL defenseman, Subban played with the Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, and New Jersey Devils. He was a three-time All-Star and won the Norris Trophy in 2013 with Montreal. He wrapped his career with the Devils winning the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2022. P.K. Subban is part of ESPN's coverage of the Stanley Cup Final, which heads to Edmonton for a crucial Game 3 on ABC on Thursday. During our walk, we discussed the state of the Devils, while with New Jersey, Subban provided veteran leadership to a young team. However, the results were not always good which led to me having to face P.K. with my previous mean tweets.

Episode 15: Eric LeGrand

On October 16, 2010, Eric LeGrand's life changed forever. While covering a kickoff for Rutgers, LeGrand suffered a severe spinal cord injury. LeGrand was one of Rutgers' top defensive players when he slammed into Army's kick returner Malcolm Brown. The collision left Eric LeGrand paralyzed from the neck down. Instead of lamenting his injuries, LeGrand took it as a challenge and has become an inspiration for Rutgers and spinal injury recovery. Initially unable to breathe on his own, LeGrand worked tirelessly to rehab and eventually got off the ventilator and regained movement in his shoulders. Over the past decade, Eric LeGrand has become a force for Rutgers, as his #52 hangs over SHI Stadium. That is where we walked and talked about the optimism and belief that Eric LeGrand will one day rise from his wheelchair and walk again. Today, Eric LeGrand works for Rutgers Radio and has his own coffee and whisky brands. Both of which help raise money for spinal injury research.

Episode 14: Brian Baumgartner

Known for his role as Kevin on The Office, Brian Baumgartner is serious when it comes to barbecue. One of Braumgartner's most famous moments on The Office was when he dropped the chili pot. The meme helped him launch his first cookbook, "Seriously Good Chili." Now Brian Baumgartner has a second book, "Seriously Good Barbeque." The book has over 100 recipes from all over the country. I took the time to make two of them for Tank Cooks, and then I went for a walk with Brian around Central Park, walking past commencement activities from FIT.

Episode 13: Stanley Cup

The Stanley Cup is the most prestigious, historic, and timeless trophy in team sports. For 130 years, hockey's best have competed for it; to touch it is to touch history. In 1893, Lord Stanley of Preston purchased it in a London Market for ten guineas ($48.67 USD), equivalent to $1,650 today; the Stanley Cup was originally called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. Lord Stanley was Governor General in Canada, loved hockey and wanted a trophy to be given to the best teams who competed in a series of challenges with the winner keeping the cup, which was just the original bowl. The challenge era ended in 1910, but teams from as far as the Yukon traveled great distances to compete for the Stanley Cup. Since 1910, it has stood as professional hockey's Holy Grail. The original bowl resides in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Today, there are two Stanley Cups: a display cup that is a stand-in at the Hall of Fame and a presentation cup, which travels the world with players from the winning team each summer. As we get set for the Stanley Cup Final next week on ESPN and ABC, I had a chance to walk with one of the cup's chaperones and talk about the history of the hallowed chalice.

Episode 12: Paul Rabil

As the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) approaches its new season, I had a chance to walk with its founder, Paul Rabil. Many consider Rabil to be the greatest lacrosse player of all time. Playing 11 seasons in the Major Lacrosse League, Paul Rabil won the MLL Offensive Player of the Year Award thrice in 2009, 2011, and 2012, and the MLL MVP Award twice, in 2009 and 2011. He also won the MLL Championship twice, in 2011 and in 2015. Paul Rabil is coming out with a book entitled "The Way of the Champion: Pain, Persistence, and the Path Forward," a guide to embodying a champion's mindset in sports, business, and relationships. The 2024 season is significant for the PLL, which will again have its games on ESPN+. This year, they will assign teams to cities and hope to play home games soon. Episode 11: Jerry Ferrara

Known primarily as Turtle on the hit HBO series Entourage, Jerry Ferrara is a New York actor. Raised in Brooklyn's Bensonhurst neighborhood, Ferrara is a fan of New York sports teams, especially the New York Knicks. While not working on film and television projects, Jerry Ferrara is a regular on Celebrity Row during Knicks' games at Madison Square Garden. Ferrara has had his own weight loss journey, losing 60 pounds as he wrapped up production of Entourage. Besides acting, Jerry Ferrara is active on social media, often commenting about Knicks games and other New York sports teams. We walked on a beautiful night in New York following the Knicks' win in Game 2 against the Pacers, marveling at the Orange and Blue adorning the Empire State Building.

Episode 10: Boomer Esiason

Raised on Lond Island, Boomer Esiason was drafted in the second round of the 1984 NFL by the Cincinnati Bengals after starring at Maryland. He replaced longtime quarterback Ken Anderson and led the Bengals to Super Bowl XXIII while winning the 1988 NFL MVP. Five years later, Boomer joined the team he rooted for when he was traded to the New York Jets. At the same time, he joined the Jets, Boomer learned his son, Gunner, had Cystic Fibrosis. From that moment, Esiason became dedicated to raising money for research to cure CF, launching the Boomer Esiason Foundation. Tim O'Brien, who was a partner at Cantor Fitzgerald, helped launch the foundation, raising money from the World Trade Center. The foundation has been largely successful, as CF patients now have a longer life expectancy and are living quality lives. This includes Gunner Esiason, who now has a family of his own. Tim O'Brien and several members of the Boomer Esiason Foundation were among the victims of the September 11th attacks. For the walk, Boomer told me their story while visiting the 9/11 memorial. Boomer Esiason just ended 22 years as co-host of the NFL Today on CBS. He recently extended his deal to remain co-host of WFAN's Morning Show. Igniting a new era of prestige television, The Sopranos changed how we view cable television series. Based in Northern New Jersey, The Sopranos ran for eight years, with a still debated finale in 2007. With countless memorable episodes and characters, The Sopranos continues to find new audiences as those who were too young to watch the show in the past begin to tune in and get hooked like their parents two decades earlier. For episode 9, I was joined by Jason Cerbone, who played Jackie Aprile Jr., Dan Grimaldi, who had the duel role of twins Phil and Patsy Parisi, and Robert Funaro, who played Eugene Pontecorvo. We walked on a rainy day inside a Restaurant Depot near Atlantic City. Discussing what projects they are involved with today, including Omerta Caffé, a line of coffees and cigars inspired by the Sopranos, after a sit down at Chico & Sons in Northfield. For Walk 8, I was joined by NASCAR legend Denny Hamlin. The walk was before the Dude Wipes 250 at Martinsville Speedway in Southern Virginia. The walk included two laps around NASCAR" 's oldest and smallest track. Named one of NASCAR's 75 greatest drives, Hamlin is among 15 drives with 50 career Cup series wins. He is ranked 13th in all-time victories, one away from Lee Petty's immortal 54 wins. This includes three victories in the Daytona 500. When I walked with Hamlin, he was six days removed from his latest victory in Richmond. A veteran who was named Rookie of the Year in 2006, Denny Hamlin, who races for Joe Gibbs Racing, is transitioning into owning his own team. Episode 7: Don Mattingly

For walk 7, I had a chance to walk around Central Park with Don Mattingly. For a generation, Mattingly was the face of the New York Yankees. Playing from 1982-1995, some of the franchise's leanest years, Don Mattingly was the lone stalwart. Don Mattingly served as Yankees captain and was the best player in baseball for a four-year stretch, 1984-1987. He won the American League MVP in 1985 and a batting crown in 1984. A six-time All-Star, Matting won three silver sluggers and nine gold gloves before a back injury curtailed the end of his career. Despite this, many feel that Don Mattingly should be in the Hall of Fame, and momentum for that seems to be growing through the veteran's committee. Since retirement, Mattingly has served as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins. He currently is the bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays. Episode 6: Allan Houston

For walk six, I walked around midtown Manhattan, near Madison Square Garden, with Allan Houston. Houston played in the NBA for 12 seasons, nine with the New York Knicks and three with the Detroit Pistons. He was a two-time All-Star and played on the Gold Medal, winning Team USA at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Allan Houston was a crucial member of the Knicks' 1999 run to the NBA Finals, becoming the first eighth seed to make the NBA Finals. His shot in 1999 in Game 5 won the series, propelling the Knicks' magical run. Injuries cut short Houston's career in 2005. His number 20 is retired by the Tennessee Volunteers. Since retiring, Allan Houston has worked in the Knicks' front office and currently serves as assistant general manager.
